At the MSEA Leadership Conference in Linthicum Heights, MD on July 25th, GCEA President Heather Gosnell and Treasurer Angel Simms vowed to help Garrett County’s ESPs achieve the rights outlined in MSEA’s ESP Bill of Rights.
President Heather Gosnell said, “Signing a document doesn’t ensure anything for county ESPs that are the glue that holds our school system together. ESPs are educators, and the many lessons they impart to our students can’t be overlooked. We must make ESPs a central focus of GCEA, and ensure we are using our resources to leverage local government to improve education funding and ensure the board has the resources to adequately pay ESPs. The board of education must do everything possible to ensure ESPs have a living wage, affordable healthcare, and the dignity afforded by their position within public education. The fact these vital members of our school communities and staff are making a salary below the federal poverty line is unacceptable and needs to change.”
